Being made in God’s image (often called the imago Dei, from the Latin for “image of God”) means that human beings uniquely reflect God in ways that no other part of creation does. It does not mean we physically look like God, because God is spirit (John 4:24). Rather, we were created to represent Him, relate to Him, and reflect His character.

1. We are created to reflect God’s character.

2. We have the capacity for a personal relationship with God.

4. We possess a moral conscience.

5. We possess a will.
God created us able to make meaningful choices. Although our will has been corrupted by sin, we still make real decisions and are morally responsible before God.
6. We are relational beings.
God exists eternally in perfect relationship as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

7. We were given dominion over creation.
Immediately after saying mankind was made in His image, God gave humanity responsibility over the earth.
“…let them rule over the fish…birds…livestock…and every living thing…” (Genesis 1:26)
This means we are stewards, not owners. Our task is to care for God’s creation under His authority.
8. Every human life has inherent dignity and value.
Every person bears God’s image. That is why human life is sacred from conception to natural death.

What Happened After the Fall?
Sin did not erase God’s image. It distorted it.
People still bear God’s image (Genesis 9:6; James 3:9), but sin has corrupted every part of our nature: our thinking, our desires, our relationships and our moral character.
The image remains, but it is damaged.
How Is the Image Restored?
Through faith in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit progressively transforms believers to become more like Christ, who is the perfect image of God.
