This is what is meant by trusting the Holy Spirit to do what only he can do:
As you hear or read the Good News of Jesus Christ—the greatest life ever lived and what He has done for you—the Holy Spirit begins His unique work. In His perfect timing, He shines sufficient light into the darkness of your sin. Because of our fallen nature, we are spiritually blind, unwilling, and unable to come to Christ on our own.
The Holy Spirit draws you to Christ, opens your eyes and mind to the truth, tugs on and softens your hardened heart, and convicts you concerning sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8-11).
You come to realize that you are a wretched, vile sinner— we all are— and are lost, condemned, without hope and desperately need a Savior.
And all you can do is cry out to God for mercy and ask Him to save you!
The Holy Spirit will lead you to know just what to say and how to say it.
And God, by His grace, forgives you, declares you righteous through the righteousness of Jesus and gives you eternal life!
