Christ’s Thousand Year Reign
Revelation 20:1
“Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand.”
God sends an angel with full authority to imprison Satan. The key and chain symbolize God’s complete control over Satan and his power.
Revelation 20:2
“And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.”
The angel seizes Satan—also called the dragon and the ancient serpent—and binds him for one thousand years. During this time, Satan will no longer be free to carry out his deception.
Revelation 20:3
“And he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were finished. After these things he must be released for a short time.”
Satan is imprisoned in the abyss so he cannot deceive the nations during Christ’s millennial kingdom. At the end of the thousand years, God will allow him to be released briefly to fulfill His final purposes.
Revelation 20:4
“Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them…”
John sees believers, including those who were martyred for following Jesus and refusing to worship the beast. They are raised to life and reign with Christ during His thousand-year kingdom, showing that faithfulness to Christ is ultimately rewarded.
Revelation 20:5
“The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.”
The first resurrection includes those who belong to Christ. The unbelieving dead remain in the grave until after the thousand-year reign, when they will face final judgment.
Revelation 20:6
“Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection…”
Those who belong to Christ are blessed because the second death—eternal separation from God—has no power over them. They will serve as priests of God and reign with Christ throughout His millennial kingdom.
The Defeat of Satan
Revelation 20:7
“And when the thousand years are finished, Satan will be released from his prison.”
At the end of Christ’s thousand-year reign, God temporarily releases Satan from the abyss according to His sovereign plan.
Revelation 20:8
“And will come out to deceive the nations… Gog and Magog… to gather them together for the war…”
Even after living under Christ’s perfect rule, many people will choose to follow Satan when he deceives them one final time. Their vast number demonstrates the sinful nature of the human heart apart from God’s saving grace.
Revelation 20:9
“And they came up… and surrounded the camp of the saints… and fire came down from heaven and devoured them.”
The rebellion ends instantly. Before any battle begins, God sends fire from heaven to destroy Satan’s army, demonstrating His absolute power and final victory.
Revelation 20:10
“And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone…”
Satan is cast forever into the lake of fire where the beast and the false prophet already are. This is his final and eternal punishment. He will be consciously tormented forever, never to deceive anyone again.
The Great White Throne Judgment
Revelation 20:11
“Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sits upon it…”
John sees God’s majestic throne where final judgment takes place. Heaven and earth pass away before His holy presence, emphasizing His absolute authority and holiness.
Revelation 20:12
“Then I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne…”
Every unbeliever, regardless of status or importance, stands before God to be judged. The books contain the record of each person’s deeds, while the Book of Life identifies those who belong to Christ. Those standing at this judgment are judged according to their works because their names are not found in the Book of Life.
Revelation 20:13
“And the sea gave up the dead… and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.”
No one escapes God’s judgment. Every unbeliever is resurrected and stands before God to give an account. His judgment is perfectly fair, just, and based on complete knowledge of every person’s life.
Revelation 20:14
“Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.”
Death itself is finally defeated. The lake of fire is the place of eternal punishment and complete separation from God. There will never again be death, suffering, or the grave for God’s redeemed people.
Revelation 20:15
“And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
This is one of the most sobering verses in Scripture. Everyone whose name is not written in the Book of Life will face eternal judgment in the lake of fire. The only way to have your name written in the Book of Life is through genuine repentance and saving faith in Jesus Christ, who alone saves sinners by His grace.
The New Heaven and Earth
Revelation 21:1
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.”
God creates a completely new heaven and earth after the old creation has passed away. Everything affected by sin is gone, and God’s redeemed people begin life in a perfect, eternal creation.
Revelation 21:2
“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.”
John sees the New Jerusalem descending from heaven. The city is beautifully prepared like a bride on her wedding day, symbolizing the perfect and eternal home God has prepared for His people.
Revelation 21:3
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men…'”
The greatest blessing of eternity is that God Himself will dwell with His people forever. There will no longer be any separation between God and those He has redeemed.
Revelation 21:4
“And He will wipe away every tear from their eyes…”
God personally comforts His people by removing every cause of sorrow. Death, mourning, crying, and pain will never exist again because the curse of sin has been completely removed.
Revelation 21:5
“Behold, I am making all things new.”
God declares that He is renewing everything. His promise is absolutely trustworthy, and the brokenness caused by sin is replaced with perfect and everlasting life.
Revelation 21:6
“They are done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”
God announces that His plan of redemption is complete. As the Alpha and Omega, He is the eternal beginning and end of all things. He freely offers the water of eternal life to everyone who comes to Him by faith.
Revelation 21:7
“He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.”
Everyone who belongs to Christ will inherit every blessing of eternity. God promises an everlasting relationship with His redeemed children, who will enjoy His presence forever.
Revelation 21:8
“But for the cowardly and unbelieving… their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone.”
Those who reject Christ and continue in unbelief will face eternal judgment in the lake of fire. This second death is the final destiny of all whose sins have not been forgiven through faith in Jesus Christ.
Revelation 21:9
“Come here, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
One of the angels invites John to see the New Jerusalem, which represents the eternal dwelling place of God’s redeemed people, the bride of Christ.
The New Jerusalem, the Holy City
Revelation 21:10
“And he carried me away in the Spirit… and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.”
John is given a breathtaking view of the New Jerusalem descending from heaven. This magnificent city will be the eternal home of God’s people.
Revelation 21:11
“Having the glory of God…”
The city shines with God’s own glory. Its beauty is beyond anything on earth because it reflects the splendor and holiness of God Himself.
Revelation 21:12
“It had a great and high wall… twelve gates…”
The city has a great wall with twelve gates bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. This reminds us that God faithfully fulfills His promises to His covenant people.
Revelation 21:13
“There were three gates on the east… north… south… west.”
The gates on every side show that people from every direction will enter God’s eternal city. His kingdom includes redeemed people from every nation and tribe.
Revelation 21:14
“The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones…”
The foundations bear the names of the twelve apostles, showing that God’s eternal plan is built upon the truth revealed through Christ and His apostles.
Revelation 21:15
“The one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod…”
The angel measures the city to demonstrate that it is a real, prepared place designed perfectly according to God’s plan.
Revelation 21:16
“The city is laid out as a square…”
The New Jerusalem is enormous and perfectly proportioned. Its immense size shows that God has prepared an eternal home large enough for all His redeemed people.
Revelation 21:17
“And he measured its wall…”
The wall is carefully measured, emphasizing the perfection, completeness, and security of God’s eternal city.
Revelation 21:18
“The material of the wall was jasper, and the city was pure gold…”
The city’s beauty is beyond imagination. Its walls and streets reflect the purity, holiness, and glory of God’s eternal kingdom.
Revelation 21:19
“The foundation stones… were adorned with every kind of precious stone.”
The foundations sparkle with magnificent gemstones, displaying the beauty, permanence, and priceless value of God’s eternal dwelling place.
Revelation 21:20
“The fifth, sardonyx… the twelfth, amethyst.”
Each foundation is decorated with precious gems, revealing the incredible craftsmanship and glory of God’s perfect city.
Revelation 21:21
“The twelve gates were twelve pearls…”
Each gate is made from a single pearl, and the streets are pure gold like transparent glass. Every detail reflects the majesty and perfection of heaven.
Revelation 21:22
“And I saw no sanctuary in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its sanctuary.”
There is no temple because God’s presence fills the entire city. His people will enjoy direct, uninterrupted fellowship with Him forever.
Revelation 21:23
“The city has no need of the sun or of the moon…”
God’s glory provides all the light the city needs. Jesus Christ, the Lamb, is its everlasting light, so darkness will never exist again.
Revelation 21:24
“The nations will walk by its light…”
The redeemed from every nation will live in the light of God’s glory. Everything that honors God will be brought into His eternal kingdom.
Revelation 21:25
“Its gates will never be closed by day, for there will be no night there.”
The gates remain open continually because there is no danger, fear, or darkness. God’s people will enjoy perfect peace and complete security forever.
Revelation 21:26
“They will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it.”
Everything that reflects God’s glory and honor will be part of the eternal kingdom. All praise ultimately belongs to Him.
Revelation 21:27
“Nothing defiled… shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”
Nothing sinful or impure will ever enter God’s eternal city. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life through genuine repentance and saving faith in Jesus Christ will live there forever. This final verse reminds us that entrance into heaven is by God’s grace through Christ alone.
The River and The Tree of Life
Revelation 22:1
“Then he showed me a river of the water of life, bright as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb.”
John sees a beautiful river flowing from God’s throne. It symbolizes the abundant, eternal life that comes from God and Jesus Christ and is enjoyed forever by His redeemed people.
Revelation 22:2
“On either side of the river was the tree of life…”
The tree of life, first seen in the Genesis, is restored in eternity. It continually bears fruit, and its leaves symbolize the complete well-being, peace, and wholeness enjoyed by all God’s people forever.
Revelation 22:3
“And there will no longer be any curse…”
The curse brought by sin is completely removed. God’s throne is at the center of the eternal city, and His redeemed people joyfully worship and serve Him forever.
Revelation 22:4
“And they will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads.”
Believers will enjoy the greatest blessing imaginable—they will see God face to face. His name on their foreheads signifies that they belong to Him forever and are secure in His presence.
Revelation 22:5
“And there will no longer be any night…”
There will never again be darkness because God Himself provides eternal light. His people will reign with Him forever in His glorious kingdom.
Revelation 22:6
“These words are faithful and true…”
The angel assures John that everything revealed in Revelation is completely trustworthy. These prophecies come from God and will certainly be fulfilled.
Revelation 22:7
“Behold, I am coming quickly. Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”
Jesus promises that His return is certain. Those who believe, obey, and live according to the truths of Revelation are blessed as they await His coming.
Revelation 22:8
“I, John, am the one who was hearing and seeing these things…”
Overwhelmed by the vision, John falls before the angel. His response reflects the awe and wonder inspired by God’s revelation.
Revelation 22:9
“Do not do that!… Worship God!”
The angel immediately corrects John, reminding him that worship belongs to God alone. Even angels are fellow servants of God and should never be worshiped.
The Final Message: Come
Revelation 22:10
“Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near.”
Unlike some earlier prophecies, Revelation is meant to be proclaimed openly. God’s message is for every generation because Christ’s return is always drawing nearer.
Revelation 22:11
“Let the one who does unrighteousness… and the one who is holy…”
This verse emphasizes that Christ’s return will permanently confirm each person’s spiritual condition. Until then, everyone has the opportunity to repent and believe the gospel before judgment comes.
Revelation 22:12
“Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me…”
Jesus promises to return and reward every person according to their response to Him and the works that demonstrate their faith. Nothing done for Christ will be overlooked.
Revelation 22:13
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
Jesus declares His eternal nature and absolute authority over all creation and history. He existed before all things and will reign forever.
Revelation 22:14
“Blessed are those who wash their robes…”
Those whose sins have been cleansed through faith in Jesus Christ have the right to enter the New Jerusalem and enjoy eternal life symbolized by the tree of life.
Revelation 22:15
“Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers…”
Everyone who rejects Christ and continues in unrepentant sin remains outside God’s eternal kingdom. Heaven is reserved only for those who have been redeemed by God’s grace.
Revelation 22:16
“I, Jesus, sent My angel… I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”
Jesus identifies Himself as the promised Messiah, fulfilling God’s covenant with David. He is both David’s Creator and descendant, and the bright Morning Star who brings hope and the dawn of God’s eternal kingdom.
Revelation 22:17
“And the Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come.'”
This is one of the Bible’s greatest invitations. The Holy Spirit and Christ’s people invite everyone who is spiritually thirsty to come to Jesus and freely receive the gift of eternal life through faith in Him.
Revelation 22:18
“If anyone adds to them…”
God gives a solemn warning against adding to His revealed Word. His message is complete and must never be altered.
Revelation 22:19
“And if anyone takes away from the words…”
God also warns against removing or changing any part of His revelation. His Word is perfect, authoritative, and must be received exactly as He has given it.
Revelation 22:20
“Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.”
Jesus closes the Bible with His promise to return. John’s response expresses the hope of every believer: “Come, Lord Jesus.” Christians eagerly await the day when Christ returns to establish His eternal kingdom forever.
Revelation 22:21
“The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.”
The Bible ends with a reminder of God’s grace. From beginning to end, salvation is a gift of grace through Jesus Christ. This final blessing leaves believers with hope, assurance, and joyful expectation as they await His glorious return.
