Romans 1:1
Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle (special messenger, personally chosen representative), set apart for [preaching] the gospel of God [the good news of salvation].
[Paul uses the word bond-servant in its Hebrews sense to describe a servant who willingly commits himself to serve a master he loves and respects.]
Romans 1:9
For God, whom I serve with my spirit by preaching the gospel of His Son, is my witness as to how continuously I mention you…
[Paul’s spiritual service did not result from abject fear or legal obligation, but was genuine and sincere.]
Romans 1:15
So, for my part, I am ready and eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.
[Paul’s good news he preached is not from the emperor, but of God; it originated with Him. Its message that God will forgive sins, deliver from sin’s power, and give eternal hope comes not only as a gracious offer, but also as a command to be obeyed. Paul was consumed with this message.]
Romans 1:16
I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation [from His wrath and punishment] to everyone who believes [in Christ as Savior], to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
[Paul had been imprisoned in Philippi, chase out of Thessalonica, smuggled out of Berea, laughed at in Athens, regarded as fool in Corinth, and stoned in Galatia, but he remained eager to preach the gospel in Rome- the seat of contemporary political power and pagan religion. Neither ridicule, criticism, nor physical persecution could curb his boldness.]
[Although the message sounded foolish to some, the gospel is effective because it carries the omnipotence of God. Only God’s power is able to overcome man’s sinful nature and give him a new life. Salvation, used five times in Romans, basically means “deliverance” or “rescue.” The power of the gospel delivers people from lostness, from willful spiritual ignorance, from evil self-indulgence, and from the darkness of false religion. It rescues them from the ultimate penalty of their sin (eternal separation and eternal punishment).]
[Believes means to trust, rely on or have faith in. When used of salvation, this word usually occurs in the past tense, which emphasizes that faith is not a one-time event, but an ongoing position. True saving faith is supernatural, a gracious gift of God that He produces in the heart and is the only means by which a person can appropriate true righteousness. Saving faith consists of three elements: 1) mental: the mind understands the gospel truth and the truth about Christ; 2) emotional: one embraces the truthfulness of those facts with sorrow over sin and joy over God’s mercy and grace; 3) volitional: the sinner submits his will to Christ and trusts Him alone as the only hope for salvation. Genuine faith will always produce obedience. ]
Romans 2:16
on that day when, [a]as my gospel proclaims, God will judge the secrets [all the hidden thoughts and concealed sins] of men through Christ Jesus.
Romans 10:15
And how will they preach unless they are commissioned and sent [for that purpose]? Just as it is written and forever remains written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”
Romans 10:16
But they did not all pay attention to the good news [of salvation]; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”
Romans 11:28
From the standpoint of the gospel, the Jews [at present] are enemies [of God] for your sake [which is for your benefit], but from the standpoint of God’s choice [of the Jews as His people], they are still loved by Him for the sake of the fathers.
Romans 15:16
to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. I minister as a priest the gospel of God, in order that my offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable [to Him], sanctified [made holy and set apart for His purpose] by the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:19
with the power of signs and wonders, [and all of it] in the power of the Spirit. So [starting] from Jerusalem and as far away as [a]Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel [faithfully preaching the good news] of Christ [where it had not before been preached].
Romans 15:20
Accordingly I set a goal to preach the gospel, not where Christ’s name was already known, so that I would not build on another man’s foundation;
Romans 16:25
Now to Him who is able to establish and strengthen you [in the faith] according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery [of the plan of salvation] which has been kept secret for long ages past,
