When Jesus said,
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Mark 12:30)
He was describing total devotion to the one true God. Every part of who we are is to be directed toward Him. Love God with everything you’ve got.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
| Area | What It Means | Examples of Righteous Living |
|---|---|---|
| Heart | Love God with your affections, desires, and will. | Desire to please Him, hate sin, delight in His Word, trust Him in every circumstance, worship Him sincerely. |
| Soul | Love God with your entire life and being. | Live for His glory, surrender your life to Christ, remain faithful through trials, seek holiness, value eternal things over temporary ones. |
| Mind | Love God with your thoughts and understanding. | Study Scripture, meditate on truth, reject false teaching, renew your mind, think on what is pure and honorable. |
| Strength | Love God with your abilities, energy, time, and resources. | Serve others, work diligently, use your spiritual gifts, give generously, share the gospel, honor God in everything you do. |
What it looks like day by day:
- Put God first in every area of life. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)
- Obey Christ because you love Him. “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)
- Spend time in prayer and God’s Word. “But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.” (Psalm 1:2). - Worship God with sincerity. “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:23–24)
- Love and serve other people. “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34–35)
- Resist temptation of every kind and pursue holiness. “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15–16)
- Use his gifts and opportunities to glorify God. “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
- Persevere in faith until the end. “Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1–2)
The Foundation
It is important to remember that we do not love God perfectly in our own strength. Our love for Him is the result of His saving grace and the Holy Spirit’s work within us.
“We love Him because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
As believers grow in Christ, the Holy Spirit increasingly shapes their hearts, minds, and lives to love God more fully. Loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength is not sinless perfection; it is the settled direction of a regenerated life—a wholehearted devotion that seeks to honor Him in our thoughts, attitudes and actions.
