God is The Great “I AM!”

(6 minute read; 1052 words)

“Read the Truth. Ponder it deeply. Scroll for more. Live it and share it with others.”

The Gospel Truth begins in the very first verse of the very first chapter of the very first book of the Bible:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1

The “God” referred to here is not just a god among many false gods, but THE God—the Great “I AM,” the ever-existing, self-existent Creator. As the Reverend E.V. Hill preached, “God is!”

God the Eternal Creator

God is a greater, supernatural infinite Being, a mind who is not physical or material, a spirit outside of space, time and matter who was and who is and who is forever.

God’s official title is “Elohim,” meaning “He is God.” Jehovah is the personal name of God– which means “Redeemer.” He is the eternal “I AM.”

[Pronunciation Guide: Elohim: eh – like the e in “bed” (soft, unstressed); LOH – rhymes with “go” (this is the stressed syllable); heem – like “heem” in “redeem.”]

He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the same yesterday, today and forever.

He is the Creator God, the divine “intelligent designer,” the Uncaused First Cause of the universe and everything in it. He made everything out of nothing and spoke it all into existence… “let there be!” He is the cause of all the effects which we can plainly see all around us. And just as a building has to have a builder and a painting has to have a painter… creation has to have a Creator. Nothing comes from nothing.

The creation of the universe cannot be explained by science. It is a divine miracle– God’s greatest miracle.

He is the provider and sustainer of all things which were were created by Him and for His glory. He makes the rules and sets the standard for the world He created.

The One True God

He is the Judeo-Christian God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of the Bible, the God of heaven, the God of miracles, the one true, sovereign, and only living God and there is no other God besides Him. He makes redemption and salvation possible only by His grace through His Son, Jesus Christ. God is holy, utterly set apart—there is none like Him; and He is perfectly righteous and pure… and you and I are not; “no, not one.” We all fall short of His perfect standard of righteousness— His glory.

He is the triune God, one God, revealed in three distinct Persons. Elohim is a plural noun. In Hebrew, plural is three or more, revealing the Trinity– the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, all fully God, which is also revealed in Genesis 1:26-27 in the words “us” and “our.” The three persons of God are:

  1. God the Father – Who purposed salvation by His grace through His divine and perfect plan before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4-5).
  2. God the Son – Jesus, who accomplished salvation through His sinless life, substitutional death and victorious resurrection (John 19:30).
  3. God the Holy Spirit – Who produces and applies your salvation through conviction, regeneration, and sanctification (Titus 3:5).

God’s Nature and Presence

God is transcendent—existing beyond and above creation—and immanent—always present and active within it. He continually governs, fine-tunes, and sustains the universe He made.

God’s Attributes

  • Omnipotent – God has unlimited power as evidenced by His miracles of the creation of the universe, the virgin birth, the resurrection of Christ, and the salvation and regeneration of souls and so much more.
  • Omnipresent – He is everywhere at all times.
  • Omniscient – He knows the past, the present, and the future— all at once.

From everlasting to everlasting, nothing can change who God is or separate us from His love. His promises are sure, and Jesus Christ is our living hope—for those promises which are sealed by the Holy Spirit until His return.

And Our God Is So Much More…

This is only a glimpse of the Great “I AM.”
He is Creator, Savior, Sustainer, and King. The One who began all things will one day bring all things to their rightful conclusion—redeeming His people for eternity.

God’s Plan of Redemption

From the moment sin entered the world, God set into motion the greatest rescue plan in history.

In Genesis 1–2, God’s creation was perfect. But in Genesis 3, Adam’s disobedience brought sin, death, and separation from God. Yet even in that moment of judgment, God revealed His plan to reconcile humanity to Himself through Jesus Christ.

Man’s Problem

Sin broke humanity’s relationship with God. Here’s what has to happen to fix it:

  • Reconciliation – Restoring that relationship between God and mankind.
  • Atonement – The sacrifice that makes reconciliation possible (Romans 5:10–11); Christ’s death and resurrection.
  • Redemption – The result: freedom from sin’s penalty and a restored relationship with the one true, sovereign, living, Creator God (Colossians 1:14).

God’s Promise

Psalm 91:16 speaks of God “showing His salvation.” In the Garden of Eden, God promised that salvation:

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

After Adam and Eve sinned, God spoke to the serpent (Satan) and gave the very first promise of the Gospel.

He said there would be constant conflict between Satan and humanity — especially between Satan’s followers (“your seed”) and the One special descendant of Eve (“her Seed”).
That special descendant is Jesus Christ.

Satan would “bruise His heel” — meaning Satan would hurt Him— at the cross,
but Jesus would “bruise” or crush Satan’s head — meaning Jesus would win the final, complete victory over sin, death, Satan and all powers of darkness through His death and resurrection.

It’s the first hint in the Bible that God would send a Savior to fix what sin had broken.

This prophecy of Genesis 3:15 is a pivotal verse in Christian theology, pointing to Jesus — born of a virgin, sinless, and destined to crush Satan’s power, even though He would be wounded and die at the cross.

God’s Plan Before the Foundation of the World

Redemption was not an afterthought. Scripture says Jesus, the Lamb of God, was “slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). Paul wrote:

“He has saved us and called us… because of His own purpose and grace… given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.” (2 Timothy 1:9)

“In hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.” (Titus 1:2)

Everything in creation points toward God’s mercy and justice — offering light to those who seek Him, judgment to those who reject Him.

The Fulfillment

God Himself became man through the virgin birth (Luke 1:35). Only a sinless substitute could bear humanity’s guilt. Jesus — truly God and truly man — lived without sin, died and rose again, breaking sin’s power forever.

Through His blood, your debt is cancelled (Colossians 1:14), your soul is set free (1 Peter 2:24), and you are invited into eternal life (Titus 1:2)

In every age, in every trial, in every need—God is still “I AM.” Before creation, He was. In this very moment, He is. For all eternity, He will be. He is the self-existent One who depends on nothing and sustains everything. The God who spoke to Moses from the burning bush is the same God who speaks to your heart today—unchanging, all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-loving.

This is who God is and what He has done.

To know the Father we must first know the Son. To call God “Father,” you must accept His plan of redemption (meaning to be “bought with a price”). Jesus paid the price of our redemption on the cross.

When we accept the Son, Jesus, as our redeemer, we experience the new birth… the supernatural birth, when we are spiritually born again– we are adopted as a child of God. Then and only then is God our “Father.”

It is a privilege to pray “Our Father” and pray in the name of Jesus and for His glory.

Can you?

How great is our God!
