The essential attitudes are the cornerstones for success in both your personal and professional lives… the discipline to do things the way they are supposed to be done, the confidence to know you can do whatever you want to do and need to do, the motivation to really want to do it and the determination to persist and make it happen.
The essentials are the same for every person.
The essential essentials: Self-disciplined, very confident, highly motivated and completely determined. Tough-minded… all day, every day.
- Discipline means doing things the way they are supposed to done. Discipline is self-control; self-discipline. It’s consistently doing the right things the right way. To get this you have to do this to get this. To get that you have to do that to get that. If you want this and you do that you get that and not this. If you want that and do this you get this and not that. Specific decisions, specific actions. In between, evaluate and adjust. Is the action I’m taking getting me closer to or further away from my goal? You have to take the right type of action. It is the foundational key to success.
- Confidence is “knowing” you can do what you want and need to do. It’s not just thinking you can or hoping you can, or ever believing you can, but ultimately it’s knowing you can. Can will and can’t won’t. Whether you know you can or can’t, you are right. It works both ways. If you know you can you have a great chance to can. If you know you can’t, you won’t. You always have a 50-50 chance to do anything. There are only two things that can happen… only two results: you either can or you can’t, you do or you don’t or you will or you won’t. Confidence comes from being prepared. If you have a 50-50 chance to succeed then why not just properly prepare yourself to do it and take action and not be distracted by doubt and fear? Reset to default, the way you were intentionally designed and do it again. What could be the reason to believe you can’t? So in your preparations you have to train yourself to know you can although you know that sometimes you won’t. Evaluate and adjust and try again. 2 steps forward and one step back will get you where you want to do. Confidence comes from being prepared. Mindset’s impact.
- Motivation is the driving force that makes you take action. It means you really, really want to do something; it’s very important to you. If you really want to do something, nobody can keep you from doing it and if you really don’t want to do something, nobody can make you do it. External sources can motivate you, but to be completely in your control, motivation must come from within by the way you choose to think and act. It’s really Motiva(c)tion, the motivation to take action. Get motiva(c)ted.
- Determination- If a human has any unlimited power, the ability to do anything, it is through dogged determination. There is no greater human power. Make it happen. Determination, persistence and willpower… executing the plan of action. Evaluate and adjust until you get what you want. Be relentless.
It is “self”-discipline which makes confidence, motivation and determination happen and the sum of all four essential attitudes is mental toughness. (D+C+M+D)= Toughness.
Toughness is a rare and seldom seen condition which means you can still perform at a high level regardless of the situations, circumstances, self-perceived pressures or any distractions that may cloud your thinking and your ability to compete as you were designed. The fundamentals remain the same regardless of wrong thinking. This is what you want, this is how to get it, do it! Toughness gives you the best chance to be productive and get what you want.
